This is a five day sale, ending Sunday night. Here's an ancient Berliner Gramophone being offered with . Emile Berliner invented the disc phonograph, and the "Trademark" model was immortalized in the Victor Phonograph Co. logo, which depicts the dog Nipper listening to "His Master's Voice" on none other than this very machine.Condition is good throughout, with some issues, which are noted below. The original Berliner spring motor is still good, but the turntable needs a hold-down clamp for records, because there isn't sufficient torque to keep a record playing for more than a few seconds after the tonearm is lowered onto it, although the turntable will spin for more than a minute when the tonearm is off to the side. Nickel-plated parts exhibit considerable wear to their plated surfaces, but there's no corrosion or damage, and I suspect that they can be cleaned up with a bit of effort. The horn looks like an early Columbia horn, and the reproducer is an early long throat Victor Concert in very good condition. The brake is not a Berliner brake, at least not one that I've ever seen. The cabinet appears to have been refinished, or at least French polished. It looks like the decal -- still legible -- was preserved by masking it. On the rear of the cabinet, there's a hole to the left of the motor. I'm not sure of its purpose. Look at the pics, and maybe you can figure it out. Crank is in pretty good shape, with some plating wear, but not too bad overall. No splits in the baseboard, and no missing screws or nuts on the underside of the phonograph. Despite its issues, this is a very attractive Trademark phonograph, as you can see in the pictures (especially considering its age -- 110+ years). I'll include an early Victor single-sided 7" record with it.
That's about it. I will carefully prepeverything for shipping andpack everything carefully and properly. I've been shipping fragile antique phonographs and wireless sets for years, and I know how to get them to you safely. I can ship this phonograph to most countries, but in those instances where 79" package restrictions apply (length plus girth), I will need to ship the phonograph in at least 2 separate double-boxed packages, so if you want to make sure that you can receive the phonograph in just one or two large, double-boxed package, please contact me in advance. Buyer prepays and includes shipping. sale participants with no response record or with a private response record should contact me before placing a offer. Thanks.
