THE GOOD FAIRY
By Grace Bliss Stewart
Chicago: Reilly & Lee Co., 1930
Based on the 1916 "Good Fairy" Statue
Created by Jessie McCutcheon Raleigh
Chicago dollmaker Raleigh created the sculpture on which this storybook was based during World War I as a way to uplift people and provide them with a positive symbol; she commissioned sculptorJosephine Kern (Mrs. James Mapes Dodge) to design the model. The little figure was made as a statue, or, statuette, bookends, lamps, finials and trophies. When viewed from one side the figure is a boy, from the other it is a girl. It became so popular that "Good Fairy Clubs" were formed.
According to Jessie McCutcheon Raleigh, the reason she developed THE GOOD FAIRY was that ''It symbolized friendliness, brotherhood and good luck. A good fairy that shall be grace and innocence and sunshine, that shall smile back in the sad hearts of the old world, that shall spur people on to their best and in that way bring them good luck." Raleigh provided the foreword to this book, and the book was dedicated to her.
128 pp. with four full-page plates in color (including frontispiece) and numerous full-page illustrations in black & white by P.B. Adams, plus charming vignette drawings throughout
The story is in two parts: Fairyland and Earthland; among the many characters encountered are Santa Claus, the Whimsies, The Good Fairy (of course), and various other fanciful creatures
The book is uncommon, and particularly difficult to find in better than fair condition. This copy is close to fine, with the only notable flaws being a former owner's tiny clipped name/address pasted onto first blank endpaper and a very slight curve in the original green cloth binding
The Good Fairy is represented in gilt, along with title and author, on the front cover ~ very nice, tight copy of this desirable book ~ 6" x 8.75"
